It's a new year and with a new year comes new goals.I AM A SWIMMER.
And for those of you that know me or who have read this blog for even a short period of time know that I am a GOAL MONSTER! Thinking things through, writing things down, and working to make them a reality are what keep me ticking.
I AM A SWIMMER.
My weakest link in tris is undoubtedly swimming. A lot of times (in the past!) I have felt like I HATE IT! Yes, I said it, I HATE IT! All of you swim geeks can stop guffawing me now but I have my reasons:
1) The water is cold.
2) It's 0500. Too early to drag my ass out of bed.
3) The same people are there EVERY morning and seem about as thrilled as I am.
4) No lane lines. Random choppiness everywhere.
5) The showers are cold. Yah, cold water in the pool AND in the shower!
I AM A SWIMMER.
Notice above I wrote 'in the past' I FELT like I hated swimming. That's BECAUSE I have VOWED to make a dramatic attitude adjustment. Literally, one of my goals every morning when I wake up to swim is that I will expect and tell myself that I LIKE IT! You think this will work? I sure as hell am hoping so! Mind over matter, that is the thought here.
I mean, really, how hard can it be to tell myself that those goose bumps on my skin mean nothing and that I'm really burning up with heat. Just swim faster, right? So what if I can hardly open my eyes some mornings. I know my house pretty well. I probably could walk around it blindfolded and still get myself out the door without a black eye. As for the lack of lane lines, I'll think of it as constant open-water training. That's GOT to be good for me! And I've decided to take some control of my swimming and proactively push myself by asking these 2 guys who swim faster than me if they will do my swim workouts with me. See, I'm the only geek who comes to the pool with a sandwich bag and workouts inside. There is no 'master's coach' and the other swimmers pretty much do what feels good or right at the time (of which there is nothing wrong with, if that's what you're into!).
I AM A SWIMMER.
Today was my first swim test of the season. 10 x 100 on 10 seconds rest. I surprised myself with the result. Not stellar, but not totally in the dumper. So like all resolutions or goals, I am in the early stages of this quest. So far so good. I will remember-
I AM A SWIMMER.

I do the same sandwich bag thing! Or sometimes I just glue it to my water bottle with spit. Sigh.
Awesome goal! The one thing that seems to be working for me- as I've felt your "pain" with swimming, is that the more yards I do the easier it becomes. While the yards are in excess of what an Ironman swim would be it has helped, and all of a sudden I love swimming a lot! Keep up the good work, and i have no doubt it will get easier!
Do it! Be the swimmer that you want to become. I want to add some speed in the water this year too.
Keep taking that sandwich bag to the pool! Make it happen :)
Ok, so. Remember the grass is always greener. I hate swimning ( i dont, but i do talk like this) bc :
the pool is stinking hot, the chlorine hurts my eyes and there is alot of it, etc..and i want cold water EVERY DAY. So i actually like to swim, its the stupid pool i dont like. Granted you dont have a choice when you dont live in a metro area, but dont be too adult-ish to not use rewards. I get to to go NINA's for coffee after! And I have a partner who will swim with me, no matter when or where, so find someone to keep you accountable! And for me, the early stuf is hard, but if i wait it aint happening and i AM ALWAYS SO happy to be done, since i must do half my workout asleep:) hang in there!!!
OH YOU LOVE TO SWIM!
I LOVE TO SWIM!
SWIM SWIM SWIM SWIM SWIM SWIM! LOVE IT - be it! :) giggle.
